From the overwhelming response to our Dirty Dozen: 12 Ways to Wreck Your Maintenance Program series, I'm guessing that many of you have your own thoughts on what's wrong in the world of maintenance & reliability. Let's hear about it!!! |

I'll use today as an example. We have a customer visiting tomorrow and a GM sees a light bulb burned out; suddenly that becomes my top priority. One hour later an engineer has a scheduled calibration to take place with an outside calibration company. The scale doesn't calibrate correctly, suddendly it's my problem as well. Never mind all the other things going on, "The last person to talk to you is what you better be working on". I'm sure at the root, it is an inflicted problem of the way we operate, but it felt good to write it out for so many to read. |

I know that we all have experienced this same delima but one of the keys is to quickly decide on priorities. You had stated that a customer was coming in the next day, seems to me the light bulb should have been put on a back burner until the calibration was done. I've rarely seen a light bulb that was an emergency. |

I'd say that hate maybe too strong of a word. I've been doing this work for nearly 30 years, often times 10-12 hour days, 7 days a week because I enjoy it and feel dedicated to helping others.
It could not be more frustrating for me to encounter the controlling type of manager that must make every good idea his/her own and never gives credit to anyone. They seem to enjoy criticizing others because of their own insecurities.
I know of a corporate facilities manager that has tried to implement numerous ideas of his own that were so much of a failure, they are never discussed.
I sure hope that no one ever criticises their employees in any way. You should tell your team that you are needing a better solution and confident that they can produce one. If they find one, then praise their success.
Never give them all the answers even if you know them. If they come up with their own even when coached/guided to a good solution, they will have,"buy in" in the process and feel more worthy. |
