What IS a Work Control Process (WCP)?:
A work control process (WCP) is a detailed graphical model of how maintenance work is managed throughout its life cycle. In simple terms, the 6-Step Workflow Process image above shows the basic elements of the typical WCP. However, there is a lot more going on than what is shown in this simple diagram. Your WCP will include a custom made flow model that guides your organization through the specific activities that must occur to ensure that maintenance work is done consistently and with high precision.
Some common activities addressed in WCP Diagrams:
- Who identifies work that needs to be done?
- How is work identified, specifically?
- Who approves/denies work requests and using what system?
- How is work prioritized and by what rules?
- Is all work documented in the work order system? Why or why not?
- Who plans and schedules work orders? How?
- Who manages emergency repairs, finding parts, instructions etc...?
- Who documents findings from work that has been completed? How?
- What is the process for changing a work procedure?
- How is data collected and used to analyze and eliminate failures?
- Who analyzes the data in the work order system? How?
- What measures are used to manage the maintenance program?
- and much more... (see small portion of simple example WCP below)

Optional Workshop Features:
An additional day of facilitation can be added to the beginning of the workshop to provide more intensive coverage of best practice maintenance methods. This is particularly useful for sites where the personnel have not been exposed to proactive maintenance techniques at a level that allows them to build a work control process.
If you are a maintenance champion trying to jump start a stalled maintenance program and you have few team members who understand what you are trying to do, adding this option to the standard 2 day workshop will be a valuable exercise. The Nobreakdowns.com facilitator will provide a fun and interactive presentation that uses humor and practical examples to highlight why proactive maintenance is far superior to fixing failed equipment.
